Grammar Practice/Short Story Writing

Good Morning!

As promised, we are going to begin today's class with some grammar practice. Today we will focus on fragments, run on sentences, and usage!

Please remember to stay on top of the grammar lessons provided as we will have a test in the near future and a final exam at the end of the semester.

Once we complete our grammar practice, you will have some time to put the finishing touches on your stories and hand them in. This is a major grade! Please do not skip the assignment.

If you have questions please ask!

You are all doing a fabulous job. Keep up the good work!

Ms. Perez

  1. I was shocked that Frank chose to commit suicide. It was a cowardly decision, because he didn't have to face the consequences for his horrific acts against the girls. If you're to make a choice or decision, you should consider the consequences that are both positive and negative.

  2. Frank's suicide definitely left me with a stunning impact, especially the reveal to the fact that he attempts suicide. After this David seemed to have little care for the fact that he did attempt suicide, like hes been doing through most of the novel. I doubt it's more that he is blunt, but more the fact that he is just a child, so he doesn't understand real troubles and conflicts. After his death, they moved out of their city, which fairly felt like the right choice to do, considering all the events that happened within their home and neighborhood, and the loss of sentimental-type value. This left with a lasting impression, as they fill you in on the fate of other characters, that the future for them has done well for David and his family, which I thought to be a quite positive outlook.

  3. I was very excited about the ending. To see the book drastically change from quiet to chaotic left me shocked. Too see how Frank comitted suicide was very intriguing. Larry Watson put clues in here and there to hint to certain events coming up in the story. I really was shocked to see that he used the jars to kill himself. Watsons characters in this particular book seem so realistic. A dad who shows favoritism between his children, a gullible mother, two brothers competing for their fathers love, a supportive wife, and the son who knows more than his parents think. I thought the ending was great, it gave me enough detail to satisfy but left me thinking what would happen. To be honest I thought the book at first was boring but then I was hooked. Overall I enjoyed the book. It was mysterious. :)

  4. Montana 1948 was a far more enjoyable book that I have previously expected when Franke was smashing jars in the basement, I totally knew he was going to do something irrational such as suicide. I originally didn't expect this to be such a good book. I loved the themes, t I loved the plot and story line time and I thoroughly enjoyed the reading of the book. the only thing that I didn't expect was Davids lack of emotion after seeing franks dead body. Bravo

  5. I was completely shocked at the way the story ended. I never thought that Frank would even consider suicide, and for him to do it was shocking.I loved this entire book(one of the few i actually like).I think it was interesting and dramatic, but at the same time it was realistic and i never wanted to put it down. I'm very happy i read this book and i hope we read other great stories throughout the year :-)

  6. Franks suicide definitely came as shock to me. The ending was a little bit confusing and I found myself re-reading it a few times to truly understand what happened. However Montana 1948 was a pleasure to read and Larry Watson is a wonderful and inspirational author.

  7. I really liked the ending of Montana 1948, and I think this was a really good book. I didn't think the book would end like this. I never thought Frank would commit suicide. I thought Wes was going to bring Frank to jail, and there was going to be a trial, I liked the ending though. And I liked how the author didn't just stop before the epilogue. I liked how he wrote the epilogue and described what happened after the whole incident. That they moved, that Gloria moved too and got re-married, that Len and the grandfather died, that his father became a lawyer. And it talked about him when he was all grown up, being a history teacher, and having a wife(Betsy). And him coming for Thanksgiving and his father defending Montana.
